The Eternal Grind

A Gear Grinding Introduction

Grumpy Cat is an exercise in project based learning. It is my way of turning the Mozilla web development tutorials into website.

The ethos of this project is to

  1. Learn something
  2. Play with it
  3. Add an article with a personalized implementation of the subject.

Right off the bat, there is an issue: As I am learning what I'm implementing as I'm implementing it, it will soon look obsolete. However, this really isn't an issue at all, simply an opportunity to refactor. In this way, we can re-phrase our mission statement:

  1. Learn something
  2. Play with it
  3. Add a personalized implementation of the subject
  4. Periodically refactor the website using new things we've learned without changing the core ideas of each article.

Basic HTML formatting

This page is for those times when you feel life has gotten on your very last nerve. All you need is to keep in mind the following:

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit. Illum, aliquam omnis! Perferendis quos ab quasi nam, asperiores harum. Nemo hic dolorem fugiat nisi sequi sed perspiciatis veniam. Ad, odio fugit.

Animi cum quod, sapiente tenetur repellendus labore, voluptatum soluta saepe, modi voluptatem dolorum maiores libero. Iure, exercitationem at velit doloribus dicta, voluptatum nulla quos labore molestias aspernatur, hic vel saepe.

Is this a top level heading?
No, the answer is: No -- it is just some fancy text.

Here is an ordered list:

  1. Drive to the end of the road

Quick hummus recipe

This recipe makes quick, tasty hummus, with no messing. It has been adapted from a number of different recipes that I have read over the years.

Hummus is a delicious thick paste used heavily in Greek and Middle Eastern dishes. It is very tasty with salad, grilled meats and pitta breads.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Remove the skin from the garlic, and chop coarsely
  2. Remove all the seeds and stalk from the pepper, and chop coarsely
  3. Add all the ingredients into a food processor
  4. Process all the ingredients into a paste

For a different flavor, you could try blending in a small measure of lemon and coriander, chili pepper, lime and chipotle, harissa and mint, or spinach and feta cheese. Experiment and see what works for you.

Storage

Refrigerate the finished hummus in a sealed container. You should be able to use it for about a week after you've made it. If it starts to become fizzy, you should definitely discard it.

Hummus is suitable for freezing; you should thaw it and use it within a couple of months.

Emphasis and Importance

"I'm glad you weren't late." He said with an exaggerated eye roll.

In the paragraph above, we use <em> tags to emphasize 'glad' and 'late.' This allows screen readers to use a different tone and is distinct from simply using italics.

The Test

Basic HTML Animals

This is the first paragraph in our page. It introduces our animals.

The Llama

Our Llama is a big fan of list items. When she spies a patch of them on a web page, she will eat them like sweets, licking her lips as she goes.

The Anaconda

The crafty anaconda likes to slither around the page, travelling rapidly by way of anchors to sneak up on his prey.

Looking at lists

Turn the following list of my favorite vegetables into an unordered list.

Turn the following directions into an ordered list.

  1. First knock on the door
  2. When prompted, say the magic word
  3. Wait for at least 5 seconds
  4. Turn the handle and push

Emphasis and importance

There are two things I care about — music and friends. Someday I might be able to get my friends interested in each other, and my music!
